The Dragon Breathes Fire Again

Being an archipelago, the Philippines has many bodies of water where we can explore numerous things, such as different sports. And one of the sports that emerged in our waters is the dragon boat competitions. The official Philippine Dragon Boat teams from the Philippines have garnered several recognitions from different competitions around the world.

The Team that Worked Together

The team made a name in the 2010’s when they first bagged their five gold medals from the IDBF World Championships in 2011. Since then, the Pinoy peddlers never ceased to give impressive results in the different competitions they joined.

Some of the huge victories they garnered are two gold medals from the 2014 IDBF World Cup, five gold medals in the 2018 ICF World Championship where they also got the first place among all competing teams, 2016 ICF Asian Championships held in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

The latest achievement from the Philippine Dragon Boat Team is their five gold-medal victory in the ICF Dragon Boat Championship in2019 held in Singapore. They made a history with this victory and bagged the overall title.


There are two national dragon boat teams that claim to be the country’s official national team. There is an on-going dispute between the Philippine Dragon Boat Federation and the Philippine Canoe-Kayak Dragon Boat Federation over which is the legitimate and official national dragon boat team of the country.

Dragon Boat Competitions

Because of the popularity of dragon boat in the Philippines, there are some dragon boat competitions held in the country. Aside from the 2016 ICF Asian Championships held in Palawan, SM by the Bay also hosted its first dragon boat regatta in 2019. It was joined by 30 teams from different parts of the Philippines with different categories officiated by the Philippine Canoe-Kayak Dragon Boat Federation.
