Jump into any pool and you’ll no doubt see at least one person training. With triathlons becoming more popular, it’s hard to swim, bike, or run without someone zooming past you. To many, the Ironman is the ultimate test of triathlon endurance.

Last August 22, 2010, the Philippines’ second Ironman 70.3 event was held in CamSur Watersports Complex, organized by Sunrise Events Inc. Although Ironman 70.3 is only half the distance, don’t think that it’s a piece of cake. More than 800 participants had to swim for 1.9 km, bike for 90 km and run for 21 km.
Aside from the distance, there was also the weather to contend with. While the triathlon began at six thirty in the morning, it lasted until twelve noon when the sun was at its summit. The temperature hit 32 degrees, so it was a hot and sunny morning for the athletes.

Professional athletes flew in from all over the world to join. Australian Pete Jacobs won this year’s Ironman 70.3 with a time of three hours and 58 minutes. Last year’s winner, Terenzo Bozzone from New Zealand was right behind him at four hours and five minutes. Canadian Magali Tisseyre won the women’s category at four hours and 27 minutes.

But the Ironman 70.3 was not just for the pros; local celebrities took part as well. Senator Pia Cayetano finished the whole Ironman 70.3 in six hours and even placed third in her age group. Piolo Pascual and Tessa Prieto-Valdez were among the relay runners.
