Again: why can we not make films like these? Packs an emotional wallop, the equivalent of Vesuvius destroying everything in its path, yet sober and sublime. Clooney lives up to the reviews; here, he is the anti-thesis of the icon on the red carpet or the glossies. H e wears high-waist "tatay" pants complete with the posture and awkward movements associated with people who have been beaten up by the years. It is a performance reminiscent of Hanks' Gump. The eye-candy here is provided by the young and luminous Shailene Woodley, who plays his rebellious and later repentant elder daughter. Shades of Meg Tilly in Agnes of God, we should all keep an eye out for the great things she can do one day. The final touch on this perfect canvass is Hawaii, one of the ultimate places of natural beauty on our planet. It is the other lead character that informs us of how things will ultimately be right.
