This movie is a joyride! And its thrills come from the thumping rock music of the 80s and Tom Cruise, whose performance is so astounding and fearless that I believe his persona as iconoclast has not hit this high since Top Gun. What weakens the film and wears thin by the end of the third act is the central love story: Juliane Hough's hairspray has more personality and Diego Boneta is way too generic to be interesting. But the supporting cast save the film: Baldwin is loads of fun, Zeta-Jones brings it on post-Chicago, Giamatti proves he's probably the best character actor working today and Russell Brand makes his shtick work.
