The much awaited re-boot of The Amazing Spider-Man is out in theaters this week (Friday, June 29, 2012). The film is based on the popular Marvel Comics superhero Spider-Man, a character created by  Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. The character first made an appearance in the comic book Amazing Fantasy in the 1960s, and since then has become one of the more iconic and recognizable superhero characters to date. Spider-Man has also been a commercial success. As the main image mascot for Marvel Comics, the character has, through the years, transcended the pages of comic books to television screens, newspaper funnies, a Broadway musical, and more popularly in recent time, a series of big-budgeted films directed by Sam Raimi, with Toby Maguire as the friendly neighborhood superhero.

This release will not be a fourth installment in the film series, but rather a reboot to the whole franchise. Taking a page from the success of Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins, the film will reintroduce Spider-Man in a darker setting, and will be delving deeper into the origins and humble beginnings of the character.

A lot of what we have come to know in the first three films will be set aside for the remodeling of this film franchise. Director Sam Raimi, who directed the first three films of the series, will be replaced by Marc Webb, who made his directorial debut with the film 500 Days of Summer. Replacing Tobey Maguire as the web-slinger is Andrew Garfield (The Social Network), and tasked with the development of the script are screenwriters James Vanderbilt (worked with David Fincher in Zodiac), Alvin Sargent (wrote for all three of Raimi's Spider-Man), and Steve Kloves (Harry Potter Series). The film will be nowhere near the Spider-Man universe that Sam Raimi had initially created. Webb's intentions are to introduce a new storyline with different characters from the comics, and to just have his own interpretation of the series.

Andrew Garfield is looking like a good choice to play the lead. The actor has impressed audiences early-on in his career, with breakthrough performances in The Social Network and Never Let Me Go, and has enough humor, charm, and serious talent to portray the character convincingly. There is no lack in supporting talent here as well, and you can expect some top-notch performances from actress Emma Stone, who plays Peter's love interest Gwen Stacy, and the always entertaining Welsh actor Rhys Ifans, who plays the films main villain Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard in the film.

Judging from the teaser trailers, confirmed cast and crew, and the overall gossip and hype floating around cyberspace, The Amazing Spider-Man is looking to be a promising film that will deliver.
