Last January 18, the Juice Team was privileged enough to witness the stunning display of talent from the best Argentinean tango dancers for "Tango Fire - Flames of Desire." Which got us thinking about the best films that tackle one of the most complex and sensual genres of dance, the Tango.

The Tango Lesson (1997)
The story of a filmmaker who, suffering from writer's block, travels to Paris to take a break in screenwriting. It is there she meets Pablo, a tango dancer. Sally becomes obsessed with tango and offers Pablo a role in her latest film in exchange for lessons. The two become lovers, and the story of Argentinean tango begins to unfold.

Je Ne Suis Pas Là Pour être Aimé (2005)
Jean-Claude, a lonely law enforcement officer, and Francoise, a woman engaged to an author preoccupied with his work, come together in this charming film about finding love in the least likely of places, and with people you'd never think twice about. Although the film's premise may be a bit cliche, the two lead actors pull it off effortlessly.

Scent of a Woman (1992)
In the role that earned him an Academy Award, Al Pacino plays Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slide, blind and retired, and nearly impossible to get along with, prep student Charlie (Chris O'Donnel), who's looking to make some easy money, agrees to babysit Frank during Thanksgiving in NYC. This memorable scene from the film has the Colonel dancing the tango with, once '90s it-girl, Gabrielle Anwar.
Moulin Rouge! (2001)
The story of a writer who falls in love with a courtesan, and the events surrounding the Moulin Rouge, an all-at-once theater, bar, and can-can dance hall. One of the most compelling scenes is "El Tango de Roxanne" wherein the narcoleptic Argentinean teaches Christian a lesson in trust, lust, and betrayal, all through tango.
Rent (2005)
The highly-acclaimed Broadway musical came to the silver screen in 2005. Directed by Chris Columbus, Rent is the story of a group of friends struggling with relationships, substance abuse, and HIV, while trying to make ends meet in New York City. "The Tango Maureen" is one of the play/film's most memorable scenes, as Mark and Joanne, both in love with the illustrious and infamous performance artist Maureen, come together to fix a glitch in the sound system of Maureen's performance space, and what was supposed to be a routine sound-check turns into a tango between Maureen's jilted ex-lover and her paranoid current beau.

Chicago (2002)
Another Broadway musical-turned-award-winning-film, Chicago brought the grit, music, and the catty banter of the musical to Hollywood and in "The Cell Block Tango," the prison's inhabitants unveil their stories, one by one, through this riveting dance sequence.

True Lies (1994)
Arnold Schwarzenegger plays Harry Tasker, a secret agent for the US government who keeps his job a secret from his wife, that is until he is forced to reveal it when they're both kidnapped by terrorists who are bent on nuclear destruction. All's well that ends well (as is the case in most Schwarzenegger movies) and his wife (Jamie Lee Curtis) becomes an agent as well, thus producing another memorable tango scene. Who knew tango lessons were a per-requisite for spies?
