We all have fond childhood memories. Playing with our friends and cousins, getting into a sport, and things like that. But for me, I was a full-fledged geek when I was younger. I played video games all day. I tried drawing the video game characters I would play and I just never really thought about anything else. In effect, I have several games that have made a significant mark in my life. Here they are:

smrpg

Super Mario RPG (SNES)

This game started it all! It was December 1994, and I was in the house of a friend near Katipunan. I saw him playing Super Mario RPG. I found it weird at first but that quickly faded, and I went as far as asking for the game from my parents that Christmas. When I got it, I played it everyday for 30 days straight! It was the start of my youthful video game filled life.

Today, it has huge sentimental value for me! Not only can I still play through the whole game nearly two decades later, but I think it is a very well made to begin with. I highly recommend that hardcore gamers whip out an emulator and try playing this if you haven't had the chance! Besides, the developers team up (Squaresoft and Nintendo) is like Henry Sy and Manny Pangilinan teaming up. It was a collaboration of the highest order. All in all, this game is a masterpiece!

supermarioworld

Super Mario World (SNES)

Yes, the red jumper-wearing, mustache covered plumber has struck my childhood heart twice! Super Mario World was such a memorable and amazingly developed game for it's time. The fun and enjoyment I got from playing this with my brothers and cousins are one of the great memories I look back to from time to time. Technically though, the design, execution, production value, and overall gaming experience for Super Mario World is still unparalleled. I'll bet the house that if I let my future children play this game, they'd still enjoy it!

finalfantasy

Final Fantasy IX & Final Fantasy X (PS1 & PS2)

These two Final Fantasy games are my most memorable. The first was my favorite on PlayStation 1, the second was my favorite on PlayStation 2. I think I logged nearly 200 hours on each game! The eye candy graphics (at that time), engrossing story telling, and game mechanics got me addicted to these games for a long time. I even downloaded the soundtracks and used their character wallpaper on my PC. I was full on geek mode when it came to these games, and I am not ashamed! :D

gran-turismo-01

Gran Turismo Series (PS1, PS2 & PS3)

From the first installment all the way to the fifth, I religiously played this game. It has been so influential on me that it is a big reason why I love cars. It fed my continuous thirst to know more about the latest and fastest cars during a time when the internet was not readily available. I was just so fascinated with going fast and seeing the exotic car designs which, I realize, still remains until today.

There you have it! These are the video games that I grew up with. They were so influential in my life that they played a big part in molding me into who I am today. It sounds weird but during my childhood, video games were my life. And now, I don't take any single moment of it for granted. I may have bloomed late because of it, I may have not done as well in school either, but it was all definitely worth it! :D
