They say creativity stems from necessity, and when an artist is on the verge of making it big, it is an utmost need to have a name that would allow their music to stand out.

From the generic Dave Matthews Band to the cryptic Megadeth, the long history of rockin’ and rollin’ has provided a handful of monikers that have cemented themselves onto listener's minds, creating a shortcut for their tunes to scintillate the ears.

1. Red Hot Chili Peppers

The name is a four-hit knockout combination starting with jabs of red and hot, connecting with a hook of chili and then finishing with a straight of peppers. The band is a four-hit knockout combination as well with their patented funk collectively concocted by lead man Anthony Kiedis, drummer Chad Smith, guitarist Josh Klinghoffer and bassist Flea.

2. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Yeah is an essentially substance-less term often used for agreement or jubilation. But yeah also condenses the band’s deliberate instrumentals and vocalist Karen O’s distinct yelping. One yeah for both agreement and jubilation is not enough to give justice to the band’s music; three yeahs is the bare minimum.

3. Sex Bob-omb

The fictional group led by Scott Pilgrim on bass refers to the enemy from Super Mario Bros. which are literally living bombs. Such is also a perfect allusion to the dormant punk vibrations repressed by the band which then exploded as they battled and defeated the electronica Katayanagi twins.

4. Radioactive Sago Project

It would be hard to argue against Lourd de Veyra’s band being founded upon quirkiness. From their wordplay genre, jazz-rock sound and exceptional song titles, Lourd and crew cap everything off with a surprisingly fluid mixture of three completely unrelated words.

5. I Am Giant

I Am Giant is making waves in the contemporary for their take on alternative rock and the youthfulness they bring with it. Proclaiming to the world their essential vision of standing with legendary giants in an industry already replete with them, the band has only matched their fresh sound with a confidence of seasoned musicians.

In their debut album The Horrifying Truth, I Am Giant present “a collection of stories, thoughts, observations and exploration of a growing awareness of mortality and the slow loss of innocence.” The gold certified album contains the band’s hits “City Limits,” “Neon Sunrise,” “Living The Crash,” and “And We’ll Defy.”

I Am Giant is collectivized by vocalist Ed Martin, bassist Paul Matthews and drummer Shelton Woolright. And they will be bringing their sound that have made giantkillers extinct right to Manila on July 9, 2012 beginning at 9:00 PM at the Hard Rock Cafe in Glorietta 3, Makati.
