Tiger Comeback!

Tiger Woods is back!

That statement is surprising in so many ways. The first reason being that I have never played golf in my life! I've had a few rounds of mini-golf but that's just about it for my golf "career." The second is the fact that I've followed the general arc of this athlete whose sport I have never tried out. Regardless of those two facts, I have to say that I am a fan of Tiger Woods! He is exciting to follow but his sport is not. It's a weird fanaticism but bear with me.

For the uninitiated, Tiger has been one of the most important athletes for his sport in the past decade and a half. He did for golf what Michael Jordan did for basketball. He did what Manny Pacquiao did for featherweight boxing. He made it mainstream. He made it a money maker. He made it bearable for non-golfers and casual people to actually follow this sport that, to be honest, is as boring as bird watching sometimes (that's my opinion).

Anyway, he did all that simply because he was phenomenal on the golf course! He broke records and people expected him to be the best ever with the potential that he showed. Personally, I was so engrossed with the fact that he kept breaking a record after every tournament. I think that is what drew me to follow his career-- the fact that he was a record breaker. There's amusement in knowing that you are watching someone who will forever be a part of history books.

In 2009 though, disaster struck. A string of injuries plus a big time scandal rocked Tiger Woods. He ended up staying away from golf only to have recently returned. By that time, there were new stars on the rise, he was extremely rusty and people had thought that his best days were behind him. It was pretty sad because at one point, even I was doubting if he would ever return to winning form.

However, just like any great athlete, Tiger Woods persevered and allowed his talent to do the talking. Against the odds, he got his second win at the recently concluded Memorial Tournament. It may not seem like much but when you look at the statistics, there are only two PGA players who have more than two wins this season-- Tiger and some other dude! (I only care about Tiger Woods). With that, it's safe to say that he is, at least, rounding into form! This is exciting stuff because I can't wait for him to finally get back to breaking records and making the professional world of golf his own playground! With a couple of Majors still coming up this year, things are looking exciting. After the Boston Celtics, let's go Tiger Woods!
