So I’ve been meaning to visit this second hand bookstore called Bookay Ukay for a while now and I finally did the other day.
Photos by Julius Valledor

When I got there, two little boys were so excited to find the book they were looking for. I didn’t get to see what it was but they needed the help of a tall older boy who worked there to reach the higher shelves.
"Balik kayo dito, ikwento niyo kung tungkol saan yung libro ha?”
There was another girl who worked there and she kept scanning the new arrivals that came in boxes, turning a few pages and trying to decide which category it fell under. A bookstore manned by people who actually like books – that’s how all stores should be.
I was so happy to find pieces of my childhood there. HAHA! Ang drama ba? But seriously, Sweet Valley High, R.L. Stine, Babysitter’s Club!!!

They even had the old school choose-your-own-adventure books!

I used to spend hours reading Enid Blyton’s stuff.

I would totally ace this quiz on Roald Dahl.

“I used to have this book!!” Richard Scarry books were one of my favorites.

There was also a whole section for Filipino authors.

I had a couple more interesting finds like this book called “Karen Kepplewhite is the World’s Best Kisser” -- children’s book about kissing? Interesting. Hehe.

There were also biographies.

Some books are classics.

Some are not =).

What makes the place even more awesome is the fact that they had JUICE.PH magazines! Hahaha.

Go on your own treasure hunt! Bookay Ukay is located at 55 Maginhawa st. UP Village Diliman Quezon City (bookay.multiply.com)

Oh wow, Enid Blyton! My Aunt sent me tons of books by her and read them through my childhood. Nakaka-miss! I gave it away but unfortunately, the person I gave it to didn't like reading too much. I can also relate to the "reading everything I could find at home". Pati yung new school books before the school starts, binabasa ko na rin. And the smell of the bookstore? Ahh.. :)

This is actually fun...You'll get a lot of interesting finds here. I guess, This is heaven for those bookworms out there. I myself don't really read a lot but, I remember when Princess Diana died that was the time I became interested with reading, I collected all the stuff with her stories, The magazines,Biography and everything. Then suddenly I read about the Royals...It started there. Now, I read when I have the time.

This is great news! I'm crossing my fingers for a copy of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams. If not, i mentioned the book title in case a fellow Juice blog follower (or Saab) has a copy. Let's help each other out!

I remember Lualhati bautista's masterpieces, bata bata and dekada '70. I read them for school requirement but they left me a great experience and lesson. Also I was hooked to Bob Ong's collection of witty books. haha

Saab's descriptions and sentiments remind me of The Shop Around the Corner, the book shop owned by Meg Ryan's character in You've Got Mail. I'm gonna bring the kids to this store. Thanks, Saab!

I would definitely visit this haunt when I go by. Thank you for pointing this out! I can totally relate with the flashbacks on the books from my childhood! good ol' junk food-but-oh-so-good by the likes of Francine Pascual, R.L. Stine. This gives a musty attic feel, I could curl up there for hours!

I used to own several Choose Your Own Adventure Books. I think they were the first to introduce "plot interactivity" on printed materials. Meron pa bang Encyclopedia Brown ngayon? (February 17, 2011)
