Raise Your Glass!

Posted on December 11, 2011 by Therese Reyes

Because I know all of you just have one question on your minds, let me answer it before anything else. Yes, it's better than Valentine's Day and yes, you should watch it. I'll tell you why. It took time to think of how I can cover every single sub plot on this star studded flick and at first I thought it would be best to just do a run down according to the arrangement on the poster above. That way I won't forget anyone but I realized that I can't really talk about each of them without spoiling it for you. You see, I can't really decide what my favorite genre of movie is but what I do know is that I love  movies with intertwined story lines. Love Actually or Babel, I watch them all and because of all that I've watched, I noticed that one very important part is waiting to see how each character is connected to the next. That's probably why the trailer to New Year's Eve was kind of vague and just showed us the atmosphere and not really the story. So instead, I'll just tell you what makes this movie worth watching especially during the holidays.

I have to tell you, I was way more excited for Valentine's Day to come out. I watched out for it possibly for more than a year and wanted to see it even before the trailer came out. When the trailer was finally released, I couldn't help thinking how "totally awesome" it was. The song was perfect and most of the Hollywood celebrities I cared about that time were there. When else will you find Patrick Dempsey, Taylor Swift, Topher Grace, Julia Roberts, and much more in one movie? They were the most random bunch of talents and I thought that was marvelous. Turns out that would be the reason for its downfall. The characters and the stories never truly connected with one another and the whole thing was just half baked. I did  love parts of it but the movie in its entirety was bland. That I think is its main difference with New Year's Eve.

(Check out: Valentine's Day)

Yes, there are still some parts in the movie that seem forced. For one thing, I could never believe Katherine Heigl and Jon Bon Jovi's relationship because the two of them have chemistry that's close to nothing. But what saves this movie is that it has a unifying factor that allows each sub plot to reach their climax all at the same time. Everyone was waiting for the clock to strike at 12 and each story basically revolved around that, making it more cohesive than Valentine's Day. One more thing is that celebrating New Year's Eve is just much more universal than Valentine's Day which is just too overrated for some. Watching New Year's Eve will definitely excite you for all your upcoming parties and makes the end of 2011 look like one big party.

When the movie's done, even though you're left with a few questions on your head, you still have that feel-good giddiness you only get from Rom-Coms.

If you still don't know whether you want to see this or not, maybe Lea Michele can convince you.
