Singapore's Red Dot Museum

Remember those innovative but beautifully designed gadgets you see online? Can't remember? Let me refresh your memory with these nifty gadgets we adore and want:

These items are not just concepts that were carefully designed using some high-end software. No, these items are real and also for sale! Okay, probably not all of them are for sale but for S$8, you get to see these items come alive at the Red Dot Museum in Singapore.

The Red Dot is actually a design center awards that was established in Germany at 1955. There are currently two Red Dot Museums in the world, one in Germany and the other one is in Singapore. I'm a huge advocate of design (mainly contemporary) and when I saw this museum in one of the many tourist brochures about Singapore, I just knew that I had to check it out. The museum is located at Maxwell Road, near the Tanjong Pagar MRT. You can't miss it, it's a red brick building.

** If you're coming from Mint Museum of Toys (just what I did), head on to the nearest bus stop at North Bridge Road. There's a bus there that will take you straight to Maxwell Food Centre (or Maxwell FC). It's quite easy to go around Singapore using their efficient public transportation system! **

Was my visit worth is? Sadly, the answer is no. The Red Dot Museum has failed to impress me. The museum was simply a gallery of the pretty electronics, packaging designs for different companies, and so on. It could have been nicer if visitors could interact with any of the products displayed, making it more realistic. Despite that, I still think it's worth the visit. I honestly like the fact that they're promoting and implying a very important message: Design is a factor we should never neglect. In order for a product to sell or a successfully send across a message to the market.

If you think you've wasted your time going to this museum, don't worry. The Red Dot Museum is giving out brochures of other places you may want to visit near the area. I still have to review some of the places on the brochure, so watch out for that (it might appear on my personal blog though, I'm not entirely not sure).
