Censorship Sucks

Posted on June 22, 2012 by Lui Tortuya

So my girlfriend and I were out late the other night around Last Full Showing, trying to find a movie in which we didn’t have to kill too much time waiting for. The only movie left showing was Piranha 3DD. I had heard a review about the first one warning the moviegoer that if you’re looking for quality in a movie, it’s really not the movie to go see but nonetheless it's super fun. The film was made to be a goofy throwback to 1980s date movies, which were corny and shocking and purposely had a very shallow storyline. Come on, it has Doctor Emmit Brown from Back to the Future in it. The whole time I kept waiting for him to say “Great Scott!” The makers of the film had no intention of anyone mistaking this movie for something other than a lot of ridiculous boob shots and fake killer fish.

So we bought the tickets and rushed to get in because the movie had started and I didn’t want to miss any important beginning parts to the plot. To be completely honest, I hadn’t even made the connection between the title-- 3DD and boobs--at this point I just wanted to sit down and laugh a little, flinch a little and have a ridiculously silly time. The connection between the title and boobs became painfully apparent within the first two minutes of the movie (really supposed to be ten minutes but cut to two due to censorship). The opening was meant to be an onslaught of sexy women in tiny little bikinis and probably a lot of naked boobs but somehow some stupid person or persons from the MTRCB decided to chop out every boob scene from the movie to the point where the movie was impossible to understand.

I’m not exaggerating. It was just a bunch of people hugging to the point of almost making out then a wonky cut of the film, scratchy audio and then a jump to the next scene of people talking about a part of the movie that we missed because they cut it out. I was seriously pissed because I felt like a 33-year-old grade school student. I sat there fuming, having been duped into watching this, and contemplated asking for my money back but that would have been pointless.

Funny, I was planning to have fun with this blog and make some jokes and toy around with the boob theme but now as I’m writing it I find myself getting pissed off again. It’s not really about the boobs. If I needed a boob fix there are plenty of better films for free online. It’s about the fact that I’m not able to see the movie that I paid for because someone appointed or hired some stupid person with a skewed sense of authority to sit on a censorship board to determine what I can and can’t see as an adult.

(All the best deals are here at EYP Deal Finder.)

OK, so some people don’t want their kids watching stuff like this, but I’m not their kid. Why should I have to live my life according to someone else's method of values development and sheltering? Not my thing. I personally think that open dialogue and honesty about the real world is the way to go especially with your children. How about make a proper rating system that works and some solid rules that aren’t subject to change based on some stupid person's preference and sheltered perspective and let me choose what I want to see. I’m not sure what happened with this movie. I think it may have been that someone saw that the numbers were good internationally for the film and thought that they could make some money with it by also showing it but cutting out all the "bad parts" to fit the rating system here.

Either way, it’s a broken system and in my opinion reflects a broader social hypocrisy when it comes to ethics and values regulation. And it really just ruins the movie.

What do you think about the country's present regulations on movie censorship? Should the rules on censorship and ratings be revised or are they working just fine? Share your thoughts.

The problem is that people do not know how to censor. Some take it literally, while others simply don't know how to take it. We will also need someone who will censor the censors.
