Xiao Long Bao Addiction

Posted on July 17, 2012 by Mikael Daez
I recently just came from Shanghai, China and given my self-professed love for dumplings, it was bound to be a great trip. In a nutshell, it really was an awesome trip and those amazing Xiao Long Bao dumplings played a big part in that. Here's a little trivia:

Dish:
Xiao Long Bao
Alternative names: Soup Dumpling, Shanghai Dumpling
Description: Ground pork with vegetables covered in dumpling wrap and steamed to perfection! The end result is a dumpling with meat and soup swimming inside its wrap.

Yup, you read that right! There is soup inside the dumpling that is a result of the steaming process. It reminds me of the soup that you sip out of balut actually. All in all, it's a great tasting food experience that is heightened more because of how you eat it. Luckily, I had a friend who taught me right away how to eat Xiao Long Bao.

How to eat Xiao Long Bao:

1. Get a pair of chopsticks and push a dumpling onto a soup spoon. You don't want to break or burst the dumpling unless you want all those yummy juices to come spilling out before you can sip it.
2. Nibble on the dumpling wrap to create an opening
3. Sip out the Xiao Long Bao juice just like you would from balut! (#nomnomnom)
4. Then pop the whole darn dumpling into your mouth and be whisked away to foodie heaven!
5. (Optional) I'm a rice person so I'd down a spoonful of Yangzhou (Yangchow) rice along with my dumpling.
Apparently, there are several places where we can get some of these dumplings in Metro Manila. Here are the few restaurants I've gathered so far:

There you go! Try it out and impress your with friends with your savvy knowledge of how to eat those tasty dumplings! But seriously, it's really fun AND delicious!

Have you ever tried Xiao Long Bao? What did you think of it?
