Subspace Coffee House

Posted on November 02, 2011 by Arriane Serafico

It's not just the K-Pop, it's not just the dramas -- beyond all that, here's something you need to know about Koreans: they love their coffee, and they take it very, very seriously.

(Check out the best Coffee Shops in the metro here)

I've already been to Seoul twice, and those photos above are barely the beginning of my cafe adventures in that city. Each coffee shop would have its own quirky theme (they even have dog cafes and cat cafes and ones inside vintage cars!) -- and they would serve caramel macchiatos, affogatos, cafe mochas, waffles, bagels in the prettiest ways possible.

But while you're still waiting for the next seat sale to be able to experience the Korean coffee culture firsthand, don't fret -- drop by Subspace Coffee House in Ortigas, a secret gem of a cafe that brings a little bit of Seoul into Manila.

Subspace Coffee House: Your new secret hangout

It’s such a welcome break from the usual Starbucks and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf -- and believe me, their coffee selection will pose a challenge even for the most decisive of coffee drinkers: aside from the Peanut Butter Latte, they have choices like Dark Chocolate Mint coffee, Nebula Coffee Jelly, and — get this — something called Purple Potato Latte.

(Yes, I know it’s just a prettier way of saying Kamote Latte, but doesn't it sound absurdly intriguing? And I have to say, it tastes really good!)

The owners are furniture designers, and their furniture/home/interior shop, Space Encounters, is but a few cartwheels away from the cafe -- so this completely explains why Subspace is so well-designed, not to mention, so photogenic! Although small, the whole space is brimming with quirky furniture, wall hangings, and knicknacks:

(Check out all those chairs hanging from the ceiling! The last photo is from a recent photoshoot for Punchdrunk Panda at Subspace Coffee House. That's me, along with other bloggers, and the owners of the cafe and the PdP team!)

But we come to the biggest niche attraction of it all — the playlist is mostly K-Pop and they sell K-Pop merchandise (albums, stationary, even those Girls' Generation energy drinks!).

Subspace Coffee is located on the ground floor of Grand Emerald Tower, F.Ortigas Jr. Road, Pasig City. You can like them on Facebook or follow them on Tumblr. I hope they open another branch in the Makati area soon!
