Downing My Summer Belly: Cool Tropical Cocktails

Posted on April 06, 2011 by Kristine A. Caguiat
Be a lazy daze this summer season and chill out with our offbeat cocktail recipes! There's absolutely nothing better than lounging by the beach with nothing to care about but the contents of the cocktail glass in your hands. Bottoms up!

1. Lava Lamps

1 pack of red or blue gelatin mix
1 cup boiling water
1 cup vodka
1 bottle of champagne

For 2 minutes, stir together the gelatin mix and boiling water until completely dissolved. Stir in your cup of vodka. Pour the entire mixture into an ice cube tray or into portion cups. Chill until set, at least 2 hours. Pour champagne into glasses. Break up the gelatin with a fork, and pour into a glass of champagne. A little swig and stir will give your champagne flute that lava lamp action!

2. Sex In the Shower

1 oz. Blue Curacao liqueur
1 oz. Triple Sec
1 oz. Butterscotch Schnapps
1 1/2 oz. Orange Juice

Starting with the Blue Curacao, pour in your Triple Sec, Schnapps and top off with some orange juice. Stir well and add your ice cubes! Now you're just about ready for some sex in the shower… unless of course you made a serving for just one.

3. Electric Lemonade

1 1/4 oz. Vodka
1/2 oz. Blue Curacao
Sour Mix or Bar mix

Mix in vodka and Blue Curacao, then fill the rest of your glass with sour mix. Top with a splash of lemon-lime soda, Pour over ice and garnish with a lemon slice! This blue drink will have you wired in minutes!

4. Godzilla

2 oz. Whiskey
3 oz. Mountain Dew
2 oz. lemonade

Pour whiskey and Mountain Dew into a tumbler with ice and stir, then top it all off with your lemonade. If you're wondering what on earth whiskey and neon-colored soda might taste like together, well, you'll never find out until Godzilla comes knocking down your door!

Godzilla in Tokyo

2 oz. Melon Liqueur
2 oz. Malibu Coconut Rum
1 oz. Sake
1 oz. Orange Juice
1oz. Pineapple Juice

Another more classic twist on the Godzilla, the Japanese have perfected the art of Sake mixing combinations through this unique summer drink. Chill a glass, then mix all your ingredients in a shaker. Carefully strain everything into the glass. If mixed properly, a layer of ice crystals should form on top! How awesome is that?

5. Sex Wax

1 oz. Bacardi 151
1 oz. Capt Morgan Spiced Rum
1 oz. Malibu
6 oz. Cranberry Juice

Pour in all your ingredients and mix well over crushed ice! Wax your board while you're at it, but remember, don't attempt to drink and surf!

6. Hairy Sunrise

3/4 oz. Tequila
3/4 oz. Vodka
1/2 oz of Triple Sec
2 1/2 oz. Orange Juice
2 dashes of Grenadine syrup

Despite the atrocious name, this pulpy summer cocktail is just about perfect for catching the sunrise-- but be careful, it WILL sneak up on you. Mix the ingredients with some crushed ice and add a fat, juicy orange slice and you're good to go!

7. Screw Up

1 oz. Vodka
1 oz. Orange Juice
2 oz. 7-UP Soda

The much better tasting sister of the Screwdriver, the bubbly 7-UP and orange juice add flavor to your vodka. Refreshing enough for those long days by the pool, this is the best drink to keep you company on a hot summer day. Mix all ingredients in a glass with ice.

8. El Diablo

About 1 cup ice cubes
2 oz. Reposado Tequila
3 oz. ginger beer or ginger ale
1 teaspoon crème de cassis
1 lime wedge

It's the season of heat, and what else would love the caliente season more than a diablo? In an 11-ounce highball glass, combine ice and tequila. Top with ginger beer or ginger ale, then slowly pour in crème de cassis. Squeeze lime wedge over and plop it into your glass! YUM.

9. Royal Blush

1 teaspoon cherry purée (note: recipe below makes 3/4 cup)
1 1/2 oz. Vodka
3/4 oz. Fresh Lime Juice
1/2 oz. Simple Syrup (Karo syrup)
5 Fresh Mint Leaves
1 cup ice cubes
2 oz. Dry Sparkling Wine (chilled)

Cherry Purée:? 1 cup of frozen cherries (6 ounces) puréed with 2 tablespoons of water makes approximately 3/4 cup purée.
?Transfer purée to chilled martini glass. In chilled cocktail shaker, combine vodka, lime juice, and simple syrup. Tear mint leaves in half and add to shaker. Add ice and shake vigorously for 15 seconds. Slowly strain into martini glass without disturbing purée, then top with sparkling wine and serve!

10. French 75

1 Lemon
1 1/2 oz. Gin
3/4 oz. Fresh Lemon Juice
1/2 oz. Simple Syrup (Karo syrup)
1 cup ice cubes
2 oz. Dry Sparkling Wine (chilled)

A vintage drink might just soothe your summer meltdown! Mix together the lemon, gin, lemon juice and syrup then pour over a cup of ice cubes. Stir well, and add in your chilled champagne. Light and oh so fresh, this cocktail is more suited for summer than it is in France!

11. Mint Julep

1 oz. Club Soda
2 heaping teaspoons sugar
15 fresh mint leaves, plus 5 small ones for garnish
3 oz. Whiskey
2 cups crushed ice

For some minty goodness, stir together club soda and sugar until the sugar is completely dissolved. Add your fresh mint leaves and use a spoon to gently crush them into your sugary syrup. Add whiskey, then fill cup with crushed ice and stir. Garnish with more mint leaves and tad!
