Unscripted: A GTalk conversation with Sarah Meier & Vicky Herrera

Posted on December 13, 2011 by Arriane Serafico
In no small way, the careers of Sarah Meier-Albano and Vicky Herrera are built on conversations.

Most of us remember Sarah from her stint as one of MTV Asia’s most influential VJs, where the world saw her in a constant stream of witty, intelligent banter – whether it be with the people sitting on their couches in front of the TV, or backstage with the world’s biggest music acts.

Vicky, on the other hand, had her first wide-audience dialogues through paper: she started contributing articles to newspapers and magazines as early as high school. She continued on this path after college, serving as the features editor of Status Magazine.

S & V have since collaborated on many more projects and conversations: together, they co-host Philippine Fashion Week TV, they co-write a newspaper column on Philippine Daily Inquirer, and they co-championed positivity through ‘The Dollhouse,’ a short-lived radio show on U92.

Evidently, these two ladies have been stringing hyphens to their job descriptions as if they were but beads on a necklace. And pretty soon, they’ll be affixing another hyphen to that – for Sarah and Vicky are bringing their most memorable unscripted conversations from their radio show onto a new medium: they’ve transformed air waves into words on an actual book.

Entitled “Unscripted,” this book features a diverse roster of interviewees that includes names such as Madame Imelda Marcos, rockstar Raimund Marasigan, educator Gang Badoy, iconic hip-hop group Mastaplann, and PBA legend Jeff Cariaso. The list goes on—get to peek into the brains of other Filipino icons: Jim Paredes, Lourd de Veyra, Kate Torralba, Kuya Germs, Tessa Prieto-Valdes, Ryan Cayabyab, Jeannie Goulbourn, Carlos Celdran, Rico Hizon and Boyet Sison.

I sit Sarah and Vicky down for an unscripted conversation of our own, this time on an entirely different platform: not on TV, not on radio, heck, not even in person—but on Google Talk. Now, theirs is a dynamic that is best experienced in its genuine rawness, so instead of quotes, I give you screencaps of our online dialogue.

S&V: On good conversations and
our multi-hyphenate generation

S&V -- or rather S vs. V

The Dating Game

In somewhat a game of find the similarities, I paired up some of their featured interviewees in an imaginary one-on-one encounter. The challenge for S & V was to answer this question:

"If these two people met up for coffee,
what would their conversation be about?"

S&V: Dream Interview (and where I make Vicky cry)

S&V: The Epilogue

"This is nice. I like genuine conversations," types Sarah, punctuating her musing with a smiling emoticon.

A hundred miles away, her words glow warmly on my laptop screen -- and without knowing if she is indeed smiling in real life, I agree. This was, after all, right after I unknowingly made Vicky cry through a virtual conversation.

Who says the G in GTalk can't stand for Genuine? (View the whole interview transcript here!)

'Unscripted' will be dropping in all Fully Booked branches on December 15, 2011. The book also features cover art and design work by Christian San Jose, other designs/illustrations by Kasey Albano, and photographs by Roy Macam.
