DA PINOY DYOKS: Laughter is our Nation's Best Medicine

Posted on July 20, 2012 by Spanky Hizon Enriquez
Dolphy's passing really left a palpable void in our hearts.

One of my best friends, one of the coolest people I know, texted me last Sunday, as he was watching the King of Comedy's funeral, and mentioned his surprise at how affected he was by what he saw. He realized then that for so many Filipinos who grew up from the '50s to the '90s, Dolphy was an integral part of our weekly television habits; in many respects, Rodolfo Vera Quizon almost was our second father -- and for not a few Pinoys, despite his human frailties, Dolphy was the 'ideal dad.'

I realized, after watching all the heartfelt and humorous eulogies for Dolphy, exactly how much he contributed, and distilled, the essence of the Filipino Sense of Humor.

When it comes to our jokes, as Brod Pete so wonderfully shows below, Pinoys love:

1. Bawdy
2. Irreverent
3. Self-Depreciating

This is precisely the kind of unassuming simple humor that's reflected in our key national character trait:

Resiliency!

We love to laugh at ourselves and the people around us, true...

... but there's always an underlying message behind our smiling facade. :)

The Pinoy sense of humor may not be high-brow, and it will never need to be. Our laughs come not from our brains, but from our bellies, deep down, full and rich and loud and gut-busting!

Mabuhay ang Komedyanteng Pinoy!

LABET! While there is a brow-floor below which I could cringe, generally, basta huwag lang from Star Cinema or ABS-CBN, Pinoy humor is essential. Catch TARZAN VS TANSAN with Dolphy and Vic Vargas + Chichay and Panchito == over the top!
