The nineties popularized many things like cellphones, the internet, and grunge but who could forget the rise of teeny-bopper fads? Probably because I'm a (late) nineties kid myself, I could really never imagine the decade without baggy pants, backwards caps, and Freddie Prinze Jr. But of course, with every conversation nostalgic for the nineties comes the inevitable topic of boy bands.
We learned in marketing class that the resurgence of fads isn't really a rarity at all and from simple observations, we can say that trends do come back. Wide-leg pants are again, closet staples and I cannot even count anymore how many Top-Siders I see worn everyday so it really is to no surprise that boy bands are back. Complete with (whether you like it or not) catchy tunes, and pretty boys who make girls swoon, boy bands are again taking over.
As someone who witnessed the rise and fall of this fad, I was not sure about how to feel about its return. Don't get me wrong, I'm not ashamed to admit that I danced to Backstreet Boys' Get Down and would call dibs on Mark of the band A1 but I do think that there should be more than just dance moves and repetitive lyrics in today's music. When I think about it further though, just like how I believe that box office hits are as important as Oscar winners, no one can really take away music genres like this. Pop music is relatable, fun, and most importantly, entertaining.
For this round-up of today's hottest boy bands, I decided to consult the most reliable source I could get a hold of, my thirteen year-old sister. Who else would be better to ask but the target market of these undeniably successful pop groups? So for those of you who have been missing music like this, read on. And for those who hate them? Better keep reading as well even just to brace yourselves because I have a sneaky feeling you'll be hearing even more of them.
