Up in the Air
|
Synopsis:Ryan Bingham's job is to fire people. The anguish, hostility, and despair of his "clients" has left him falsely compassionate, living out of a suitcase, and loving every second of it. When his boss hires arrogant young Natalie, she develops a method of video conferencing that will allow termination without ever leaving the office - threatening the existence Ryan so cherishes. Determined to show the naive girl the error of her logic, Ryan takes her on one of his cross country firing expeditions. And as she starts to realize the disheartening realities of her profession, he begins to see the downfalls to his way of life.

Up In the Air is from the parallel universe to Jerry Maguire. On the surface, the lead characters seem very different: Maguire cannot be alone, while Ryan Bingham (Clooney) chooses to be detached because in his mind, he's never alone. The difference is Maguire is not aware of his predicament, while Bingham embraces it. Set against the harsh economic realities of decimated tenures in the workplace, Up In the Air is smart, funny, and cathartic. The cast is a gem: Clooney seems to have lived to play Ryan Bingham. Vera Farmiga is the perfect female version of Bingham, from sly smile to sexual arrogance. And Anna Kendrick is annoying to perfection. This film should be owned on original DVD, and watched over many times in once lifetime.
