George Clooney is developing his craft. After UP IN THE AIR, here is another piece that's built on nuance and subtle characterization. It feels like noir, and reminds me of the recent THE GHOSTWRITER from Polanski, which makes sense because THE AMERICAN is almost purely Italian:actors, director, producers - it's all spaghetti with Clooney as the only meatball - indeed, THE AMERICAN. Some will find the action to be wanting - I would disagree. Only those conditioned by Hollywood produced color-by-numbers action flicks would say that. Where the action is, it's raw and uncontrived - quite violent, actually. But there is an atmosphere and mood that exudes romance, sex, tension and intrigue. And the Italian countryside is lovely with cinematography that is hypnotic and poetic, without distracting. Very Euro. Good job.
